Adult BJJ

At Method BJJ, our Adult BJJ class  is designed to quickly and effectively give students a solid and practical understanding of the fundamental movements of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and how to use them in a live situation.

In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, there are so many different techniques and variations of techniques that it can be easy to get lost and overwhelmed.  Professor Andrew excels at being able to help students find the underlying concepts and connective tissue that holds the movements of BJJ together, giving them a deeper understanding of “what works” and allowing students to more quickly assimilate techniques and innovate in their own Jiu Jitsu.

Each class starts with a brief whole body mobilization to lubricate the joints and help give students an opportunity to better learn how to move and understand their bodies, as well as check in with any aches, pains or stalls that might limit their ability to move comfortably.

After this mobilizing warm up, students are given technical instruction and structured time rounds to drill and practice.  The timed rounds are an effective tool to ensure that students can make the most of their time on the mats while being free to learn at their own pace.

Some of the subjects covered outside of the movements of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu include; Self defence (both standing and on the ground), judo, wrestling, basic biomechanics and anatomy, flexibility and mobility.

At the end of every class, students will take part in rounds of “rolling” which is the BJJ term for sparring.  Because there is no punching or kicking in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and through the mechanism of “tapping out” students are able to discover how their skills are progressing against a live, competitive opponent, in a safe and controlled environment.  There is no better substitute for discovering how one will react in a self-defense situation than continually and consistently rolling against live opponents.
